Munnar is an amazing hill station, famous for its incredibly attractive natural beauty. The main highlights are the awe inspiring environment, lush green tea gardens, beautiful lakes, thick forests and the friendly people. It is located in the eastern part of Kerala at the influence of three mountain streams, Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. It is surrounded by about 30 ravishing tea gardens. Bus : Munnar is accessible by road from most of the towns in Kerala. It can also be reached from Madurai (6 hours) and Coimbatore (6 hours), which are located in the state of Tamil Nadu.
Pothamedu : Situated at a distance of around 6 km from the town, Pothamedu is one of the major plantation hubs of Munnar. Views of coffee, tee, and cardamom plantations are excellent from here. It is also an ideal place for trekking and hiking amidst lush mountains, rolling hills, and breathtaking scenery.
Attukal : The place is highly rejuvenating with its panoramic waterfalls and rolling hills. An ideal place for long trekking, Attukal is situated between Munnar and Pallivasal.
Devikulam : An idyllic hill station, near Munnar, Devikulam is an out-of-the-world experience among exotic flora and fauna, cool mountain air, and velvet lawns. The Sita Devi Lake situated here is an ideal picnic spot with its picturesque surroundings, mineral water, and trout-fishing facilities.
Nyayamakad : An excellent picnic and trekking point, Nyayamakad is situated at a distance of 10 km from Munnar near Rajamala. Nyayamakad is a land of scintillating waterfalls with water cascading down from a height of around 1,600 metres.
Chithirapuram : Once the favorite of the British, this small hill station exudes an old-world charm with its old playgrounds and courts, bungalows, and sleepy little cottages. Situated at a distance of around 10 km from Munnar, Chithirapuram is home to Pallivasal hydel power project.
Munnar is essentially a hill station. Hence, there is hardly any scope for shopping in Munnar as such. In Munnar, shopping areas are limited to just small markets and shops that sell small items as souvenirs. You may not find information on where to shop in Munnar. Munnar is famous for its tea and spices plantations. So if you want, you can buy different varieties of spices and different varieties of tea. You can get the spices packed in small transparent pouches and take them home. Better still, visit a factory and they will be all the more glad to give you free samples of their spices and tea leaves. Apart from that, you can always shop for small handicrafts and other knick-knacks that are easily available in the roadside shacks. While in Munnar, it is better if you look out for the small items that can be given as souvenirs than hunt for branded stuff that are available all around the world.
Munnar is not a commercial centre like nearby Kochi. Visitors come mostly for the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. While shopping is not a major activity for most visitors to the area, eating can be a very enjoyable experience in and around Munnar.
Whether you are looking for local treats or more common tastes of India, Munnar can provide them. There are a number of eateries offering local dishes altered to suit the tastes of tourists. For a coffee break and a typical Indian snack, Gurus is one of the most charming places in Munnar’s town centre. Cheap and cheerful, Poopada is among the best spots for authentic dishes. Vegetarians are well catered to in the whole of India but one of Munnar’s better options for vegetarian food is Saravana. The East End offers a mix of dishes from across the country and a few local treats for good measure.
High Range Club is Munnar's entertainment hub. There's a bar, billiards table and a mini golf course. Abad Copper Castle and Tea County offer special spa treatments. So let the body soak up all the oil as trained hands knead in all the right ways to ease out the knots from your body.
Nights are awake only in the resorts and hotels. Entire Munnar retreats for the night early as electricity is a problem with frequent voltage discrepancies. And stepping out at night without lights is inviting trouble.
There aren't adventure parks or zoo's here, but the boating, animal watching and sliding down undulating greens should keep kids more than happy. And be sure to take them to the echo point they will enjoy the sounds coming back!
