Total disc replacement is a minimally invasive type of spine surgery that seeks to preserve the motion in between spinal bones.
Total disk replacement seeks to restore normal motion of the spine in the diseased area, without causing pain. The goal is to take out all the disc material in between two vertebrae and put a moveable device in its place.
The artificial disc used in a total disc replacement, takes care of the limitation of movement at the place where the surgery is done, which may, in turn, cause problems in spinal joints above and below the surgical area, later.
